Which answers my original question. RAMDoubler will *NOT* work on the
original LC, since it lacks a PMMU. I might need to swap a few
machines
around -- there's an LC II that's not being used to it's full potential
that could make use of RAMDoubler since it has an '030 processor with
the PMMU built-in. Thanks all for your helpful responses.

If you get TechTool, be sure to get version 1.0.3, especially if you ever
plan on using the utility to reset the PRAM on your Mac. Versions prior to
this one literally ZAP the whole PRAM, wiping out important info (such as
the amount of time the machine has been operating and other diagnostic
data). 1.0.3 only blasts away the "user portion" of the PRAM.

If the LC is anything like the old Mac II, the MMU in the machine is not
really a PMMU, but rather a chip Apple cobbled together on the cheap to do a
few of the PMMU functions. On the original Mac II you had to pull this out
and replace it with a real PMMU to get virtual memory working. My original
copy of Connectix' Virtual came with the chip way back when.

Careful. It depends on the file you are transferring. If it's a text file
or a .hqx file then the compression really helps. In the case of compressed
files (i.e. .sit, .cpt, .sea) the compression has no effect (or in some
cases makes the transfer slower). With compressed binary files, my best
throughput has been 1300-1350 cps on a 14.4 connection. Also remember that
error correction tends to slow the connection down as well.

Subject: A calm request for HEEELLLLLPPP!!!!!
This is a humble plea for help from any Mac gurus who can spare a
moment to reply. On a IIsi (17/240, system 7.1/HSU 2.01, no VM, lots
of CPs and INITs), I've been experiencing a variety of system errors
that has me fearing the possible need to reinitialize the entire HD.
I've already performed a clean reinstallation of the system and finder
but the problems persist. Symptoms include:
--Corrupted applications that won't launch due to system error #15
(segment loading error)
--Crashes giving MacsBug error message: User break at 00D2AF44 (and
F30] 'CODE 003 131A' + 0254 *MOVEM.L (A7)+,A3/A4 14CDF 1800
--Download error: Not enough memory for segment #19
I ran Norton Utilities 2.0 and MacTools 2.0, each of which found
some confused bundle bits (and fixed them) but nothing more serious
than that. DFA 7.2 says the disk is OK. I've tried optimizing the
drive and rebuilding the desktop, to no avail.
A tech. at La Cie support said he would look into the error #15 and
get back to me, but he never did. His initial reaction, however, was
that there were unfixable problems with the disk directory and related
stuff and that I'd have to reformat the drive and reinstall everything
>From scratch.
Now, I've got all my important stuff backed up on floppies (I can't
afford a backup device yet, though it's on the list) but setting up my
entire system anew will take me two full days. Clearly, I'd like to
exhaust all other possible solutions before I do that.
If anyone could shed some light here, I'd be extremely appreciative.
Millions of TIA,
Bill

We're using ARA version 1 with a Powerbook & Global Village Gold connecting

Subject: A success story TCP/IP over LocalTalk
Dear colleagues:
Assuming this is be a topic of general interest, I would like to share
my experiences to access TCP/IP services from macs connected via LocalTalk.
I know this has been done successully by lots of other people, but the question
crops up often enough.
Our situation: 40 odd Macs, all connected via PhoneNet in 3 Zones (PhoneNet
is very cheap, fast enough yet, and extremely versatil in allowing a backbone
with many branches. Now all the Macs want internet access, not necessarily
the Internet, but campus services that run on TCP/IP protocols.
For this, TCP/IP packets have to be wrapped with an AppleTalk layer. This can
be done by boxes like gatorbridge or via software. I first opted for software.
I am aware of 2 solutions: One on a PC with a LocalTalk card, the other
with the software "EtherBridge/TCP" from sonic systems, running on a Mac with
both an ethernet and phonenet connection. As the name implies, "EtherBridge"
is a true bridge. This is not what you would want when connection an in-house
network to a campus-wide network. I would rather not go into the details,
suffice to say that it worked occasionally, but slowed down our network
immensely
and many strange workstations and printers from the campus popped up in all
(or none) of our zones. EtherBridge ist not a bad product, it seems just not
suitable for this.
So much for the software solution. Now gateways, or multiprotocol routers,
or whatever they are called are still very expensive IN GERMANY. But then I
hit on "Ether.Route/TCP II" from Compatible Systems. They offer, in this
country
at least, currently the most cost effective solution. Before buying, I had
a couple of questions that were rapidly answered via email from Dan Angst
at Compatible Systems. (Well, you would expect them to be nice before you buy
:-)).
Well the box arrived, with the wrong voltage and power connector (you would
expect MacWarehouse, German section, should get this right in the first
place).
They promised to send a transformer/adaptor, and I hooked up an interim
solution. Within 10 minutes it worked! Ether.Route/TCP II also has two
LocalTalk connectors, so I could use it as a zone router within LocalTalk
as well, freeing up one server that had previously done this using Apple's
Internet Router.
All Macs on LocalTalk must have MacTCP installed, not a trivial task, but it
can be done (there is nice documentation on this at sumex, or was :-( ). Then I
had a problem: TCP/IP protocols would not hop across zone boundaries! After
several attempts I contacted Compatible Systems. They were very helpful and
studied our setup, but found no solution right away. Then they suggested I
retrieve
the latest software running within the router via ftp. Did that, downloaded
it into the router's flash memory, and, voila, it worked!
With the freeware "NCSA telnet" now all our macs can access Internet services.
It would be even nicer if this program were scriptable, I have heard that
its DOS cousin is; arghh! Does anyone know of a scriptable (auto-login)
telnet program? I am currently using Microphone pro, which is fine, but
too expensive to distribute to all our users.
Anyway: TCP/IP access by LocalTalk networked macs is fairly easy, and, once
installed (and no double IP numbers etc!) reliable.
Greetings, Michael.

Subject: Cheap PowerTalk Mail?
I work for a small real estate appraisal firm. We have nine Macintosh
machines in our office--four desktop, and five PowerBooks. All of our
machines are connected to a simple AppleTalk daisy chain, and one of our
desktop machines is set up as an AppleTalk Remote Access Server.
I was wondering if there was a simple, inexpensive way to set up a PowerTalk
desktop mail system that would store mail for our PowerBook users and allow
them to collect it when they call in via AppleTalk Remote.
We donUt have the resources to dedicate a Mac to mail serving, I would like

machines--usage would be very light.

Subject: DEClaser 1152 comments
Just a couple of quick comments on the DEClaser 1152, which I've owned
for about 15 months or so.
The printer has been very reliable, although we've used it for very
light printing, maybe about 100 pages-per-month, and end of month
check printing through Quicken. I have yet to get regular envelopes
to print though the front paper tray. I bought some "laser printer"
envelopes, but haven't tried them yet. I thought the documentation
was geared toward non-techs, and so works well for the perceived
office market. I run it attached locally to a Quadra 650 with system
7.1 and the LaserWriter 8 driver.
3 comments:
1. If you're going to buy it, it is worthless without spending the
extra $100 and getting the memory upgrade bringing it to 4M. It is
still a good buy for 4MB $799 list price, IMO. With just 2 MB we
were waiting forever trying to print moderately complex PageMaker
files (files with 4 or 5 downloaded fonts, no graphics,) because
fonts were getting downloaded each time they were requested.
Sometimes the printer would just hang. Since upgrading we've had
no problems at all.
Upgrading was its own small ordeal, partly through my fault, partly
through DEC's and it's distributors: My wife is the primary user of
our Mac and the printer, doing free-lance copywriting from home.
Her last job caused such font trashing that we finally decided to
upgrade the memory. I figured it probably used some standard
memory module, so I started to call all my usual retail suppliers,
(CompUSA, Computer City, etc.); they had either not heard of the
printer, or in the case of a retail store which actually carries
the printer, did not carry the memory upgrade. So I broke down and
called DEC, hoping for next day delivery. No good; they send
everything via UPS 3-day delivery with no option for next day
delivery. I needed the part right away; could they point me to a
local distributor which might carry the part. I could drive to one
of them and pick it up. The courteous tech rep happily gave me the
number for 3 of them. The distributors are not really set up to
deal with individual customers, but rather with DEC's normal
corporate customers. (When I told one of them I was calling about
the DEClaser 1152, he asked how many I wanted to order. :-) One of
them didn't really want to deal with me. One had a week
turn-around time, and one (who was generally very helpful,) had an
elaborate credit card validation procedure which involved my
sending my card # and signature before I could make the purchase.
I'm sure the last was OK, but I didn't feel good about it, so I bit
the bullet and called DEC back, resigned to waiting the 3 days.
The courteous tech rep took my name, card # and told me it would
ship the next day. The very NEXT afternoon UPS delivered the
package to my wife.
2. Photoshop 1.5 supposedly understands the printer's enhanced mode,
(as indicated by it's print dialog box,) but I don't know if it
works (I don't have Photoshop at home.) Someone posted that this
feature doesn't work under LaserWriter 8 anyway.
3. Someone posted that the optional paper tray cost in the
neighborhood of $150-$200. When I called, I was told it was $49.
If it will allow the printer to print with the front panel closed,
it would be worth getting, (especially if you have a kid who thinks
that paper in the front tray is free for the taking. :-)
In summary (finally): I like the printer. If you buy it, buy the
memory upgrade before you need it, it's worth it. DEC should finally
realize that there is a growing personal computer market out there,
and address it. (As a stock holder, that would make me very
happy. :-)

Subject: Disinfectant 3.4 Problem
I have received several reports of unexpected error number -192 when
scanning enabler files with Disinfectant 3.4. This doesn't happen on all
Mac models, only on some Mac models running System 7.1 with an enabler. In
particular, this error happens when scanning on Macs with enabler versions
003 (the LC III) and 040 (the Centris/Quadra 610, 650, and 800), and with
the 32 bit system enabler.
This error is the result of a failed attempt to fix a similar but much
less common error in the previous version. Unfortunately, I made the
problem worse instead of better.
I have discovered the cause of this error, and will be releasing a new
version 3.4.1 to fix it. Unfortunately, the proper solution to this
problem is rather complicated, and it will take at least several days to
develop and test it. I will not release 3.4.1 until it has been thoroughly
tested.
Once I have finished developing the the new version and have tested it
myself, I will offer a beta version 3.4.1b1 via anonymous FTP, and I'll
ask for help from the Mac Internet community to do more testing on as many
Mac models and configurations as possible. When I am reasonably satisfied
that the new version works correctly, I will release 3.4.1 to the general
public.
In the meantime, please do not be concerned about this unexpected error
message. It's a problem in Disinfectant, not in your enabler file. There
is nothing wrong with your system. Disinfectant 3.4 will not damage your
enabler file or any other part of your system. There are no known problems
with the Disinfectant 3.4 protection INIT, and you should definitely
install it and use it. Both the Disinfectant 3.4 program and the
protection INIT still provide full protection against all the known Mac
viruses, including the new INIT 9403 virus.
I apologize to the Mac community for this problem with the new version of
my program. It is unfortunate that when a new virus appears, I do not have
the luxury of an extended testing period for my new versions. I try to
minimize this kind of problem, but it does happen sometimes.
I encourage people to cross-post this announcement to other bulletin board
systems, online services, etc. It is important to inform and reassure
Disinfectant users about this problem.

I've got an evaluation copy (of version 1.2) for a review which is to be
published in our newsletter, and I installed it on my Mac Portable which
has only 40mB disk space.
Installation is not too easy if you don't have a second hard disk (or
removable, etc.), since eDisk requires that the whole disk must be
re-initialized which means that any data on the drive is lost. The same
applies if you want to remove eDisk expansion, so be warned....
eDisk works together with most HD formatters. There are no problems with
the Apple formatter (HD SC Setup) and with Silverlining 5.42; if you use
another, you should inquire beforehand.
I had the (subjective) impression that eDisk slows down operation of the
computer, but I did not measure it.
The manual seems to cover all aspects of operation and installation.
I have seen eDisk software floating around BBS systems - this is the same
version as the "commercial" one, but allows only compression by a factor
of 1,5, while the "original" version allows higher compression. The
BBS-version can be registered with Alisys, and they give you a code to
enable the additional capabilities.
Hope this helps,

Subject: FileMaker Record-By-Record Synching
I recently learned about a product from a Claris developer that will synch
FileMaker *records* across two files, and I was wondering if there would be
interest for such a product from the net.
In the latest Claris Solutions Alliance book there's a listing for a
product called InSynch. Essentially, if you have two files that at one
point in time started with the same data, InSynch will do a
record-by-record comparison to figure out which record has the "more up to
date" data, and massage the records together.
This is *not* an instance of file-by-file synchronization (for instance,
between a PowerBook and a desktop system) -- that generally takes the more
recent file as "valid" and replaces the older file. This is within-file
comparison, and makes the two databases equivalent -- even if information
has been changed both in file A and file B!
I will be beta testing a copy soon -- this is perfect for me, since I have
a copy of a file in my Los Angeles office which periodically needs to be
updated with the "master copy" in my Chicago office.
The developer is TEC Computer Consultants, and the author's name is John
Thorsen. He can be reached at 76166.1630@CompuServe.COM. He is
considering pitching this to a software house and ship it as a marketed
product.
So, is there interest?

ready to take me up on my offer of a used Mac to a good (non-profit) home.
I figured I'd get two or three takers. At last count I got eighteen, and I
wish I could give a Mac to every one of them.
There were so many good charitable uses for a used Mac that I gave
up trying to tell who was "more worthy." Instead, I decided to go with
"first come, first served." The first request I got was from the Germantown
Baptist Church of Germantown, Tennessee, to be used with their work

Subject: mactcp and ara
I have been trying to get MacTCP and ARA working
together from home to the office. Now that it works,
here's the deal for the rest of the masses, should that
they wish to attempt it for themselves.
History (or what I have as equipment):
1)Mac at home w/Modem, ARA, and MacTCP
2)Mac network at work, with macs on localtalk,
and ethernet, with a GatorBox connecting the
two and providing a number of logical zones.
3)Mac on the network at work, connected to
thinnet, with modem and ARA and MacTCP as well.
4)all of the stuff at work connected via a
cabletron box to the internet. Yippee!
The Solution:
I had initially had a good ARA connection to the
AppleShare stuff at work, but it seemed like
_none_ of the TCP/IP stuff was getting routed
>From home across the modem to work. I tried
various diagnostics and sure enough, nothing.
I had a unique IP address, and was in an
ethernet based AppleTalk zone, so what was wrong?
After asking around on the 'net, the solution
appeared before me:
Choose whether you wish to have a server-provided
or manual (static) IP address, since it doesn't really
matter as long as you can guarantee that it is
unique on the 'net. Next, bring up the ARA connection
good and solid. Now, hop over to the chooser and
place yourself into a _localtalk_ zone, so traffic
_must_ go via the GatorBox (or fastpath or whatever
you might have out there). This isn't obvious at first,
since you might think, as I did, that "well, the GatorBox
connects localtalk and ethernet together, and i'm already
on ethernet, so skip it." Wrong. Even though you are
metaphysically on ethernet (at the server's end of things),
your mac isn't _really_ on ethernet, so it can't generate
the proper packets. By choosing a zone that must go
via a router, all is made well.
I have tested this and it works. Thanks go to all of those
who helped and hinted in the process. My humble
set-up is as follows for the experiment:
Home: Mac II, 32Mb, too many disks, ARA 1.0, MacTCP 2.0.4, 2400baud modem (I
know, don't razz me on that one!)
Work: Mac IIfx, 32Mb, some disks, ARA 1.0, MacTCP 2.0.2,
19.2k ZOOM modem, GatorBox classic (we're talking antiques
here gang!)
It all works, albeit slowly. I had to increase the timeout
on my home end of things for TCP/IP; Xfer-it has been
increased from 15 seconds to 60 seconds timeout and is
quite happy.

MacTCP just lets your Mac speak TCP/IP. To talk to a Unix box you need
client software for your Mac. You can open a terminal session with Telnet
and grab files through NFS with Fetch. There are other Mac clients for use
with other server software running on your Unix box. Fetch and Telnet are
the basics.

I have used TCP over ARA 1.x. I think the question is whether the ARA server
you are using knows how to properly route (and encapsulate, etc.) TCP/IP

to let you know that it *can* work.
------ From: George Tempel, Mon, Mar 7, 1994 ------
MacTCP over ARA?
I've got a question that seems to beg an easy answer:
Can I run MacTCP packets over an ARA connection?
Here's the setup:
Mac at home with ARA 1.x, MacTCP 2.0.4, modem.
Ethernet/LocalTalk network at work, with macs on both.
GatorBox classic connecting Ethernet/LocalTalk at work.
Mac at work on ethernet, ARA 1.x, modem, use allowed
access to entire network.
Working internet connections at work (do it every day).
My mac at home has a unique IP address (but not one
in the range of GatorBox "LocalTalk" addresses). I can
dial up the Mac with ARA and ethernet just fine, and
can do AppleShare stuff just fine, but _cannot_ even
ping _anything_ at work from home. What gives? Is
this possible? My mac from home is placed into
the same zone as the ethernetted/ARA mac i'm
calling, which seems fine.
Any suggestions? We _cannot_ use SLIP or PPP right
now, and have only ARA 1.x in house (2.x is coming
in the mail).
I've asked Adam Engst (thanks Adam), but we're both
stumped. Any input from the masses?
thanks in advance

Subject: Photoshop Copy transgression
Here's a problem for you Mac graphics gurus out there...
Try this:
Open Photoshop 2.5 and make a new 1-inch by 1-inch document at 150 dpi.
Draw in it, Select All and Copy.
Close Photoshop.
Open the Scrapbook and Paste. (notice that the image in the Scrapbook
appears only half as big)
Now open PainterX2
Make a 1-inch by 1-inch document at 150 dpi.
Paste. (your pasted image will NOT appear, even though it will be listed
as a floating selection).
Now try Paste Into New Picture. (your pasted image will appear, but at half
the original size and only at 72 dpi)
Let's now try going the opposite way:
In Painter make a new 1-inch by 1-inch document at 150 dpi.
Draw in it, Select All and Copy.
Close PainterX2.
Open the Scrapbook and Paste. (the image in the Scrapbook will be
UNCHANGED in size!)
Now open Photoshop.
Select New... and be sure to choose 150 dpi.
Paste. (the pasted image is NOT changed in size!)
What goes here? Here's the executive summary:
Adobe's Copy function reduces the size of copied images which are denser
than 72 dpi.
What is Adobe doing with its Copy that is wreaking havoc with images to
other applications? This behaviour is against the Macintosh interface
rules. Copied images should not be changed when they are moved between
applications. Other bitmap editors seem to be able to handle this, why not
Photoshop?
What say ye all?

I use a power sensitive outlet from Radio Shack. It has eight or nine
outlets in it. One is a master that I plug my Quadra 700 into. When
I turn on the Quadra, the power outlet senses it and turns on all the
other outlets.
This keeps me from pulling power through the AC outlets of the
Quadra (except for the monitor). It has worked well for me for
two or three years now.
I don't remember the part number, but any Radio Shack store should
be able to help you find the device.

Hi,
I had ( a while ago) a printer test program which was distributed by
"PIGS, the PostScript Interest Group of Switzerland". Not sure wether I
can find it under my mountains of old floppies, but I'll try. If I find
it (and if there are no copyright problems; I'll check before), I can
post to sumex if this is allowed.
There are some shortcomings you should know of:
- Does NOT work with printer drivers in the Extension folder
- Does NOT work with LW 8.x drivers
- Probably best to be used with system 6.x and the older LW drivers
which had the separate LaserPrep file 6.05 thru 6.08).
- I had asked them some time ago of there's a new version planned, and
they said that it's not.
The program produces a test page (with circles, lines, etc.) and also
prints the time needed by the processor of the laser printer to make up
the page.

Subject: Problem with Newswatcher and .newsrc file
I'm having a peculiar problem with Newswatcher 2.0d17 related to the
Unix .newsrc file. John Norstad hasn't had other reports of it, so I'm
inquiring here whether someone else might have seen it.
I'm using Newswatcher's ability to automatically retrieve the .newsrc
file from a host; thanks to someone else's recent suggestion of preceding
the host password with a minus sign (to make the host suppress extended
response text), this now works like a charm. However, when I tell
Newswatcher to send the .newsrc file *back* to the host, it appears that
sometimes a chunk of the tail gets repeated, as with this piece from the
end of my .newsrc file:
uiuc.sys.ibm-pc: 1-79
uiuc.sys.mac: 1-466
uiuc.trek: 1-112
uiuc.windows.x: 1-21
.trek: 1-112
uiuc.windows.x: 1-21
It makes me wonder if an ftp packet was sent twice, but I'm no TCPIP expert
so it's probably no use to speculate.
The problem becomes noticeable the next time Newswatcher gets the .newsrc
file, since there may be lines (such as .trek above) that would cause it
to complain.

Subject: RAM Trippler. How to.
It is very easy to tripple your RAM, as RAM Doubler is just another sort of
Virtual Memory. First it tries different things to keep things in RAM, but
when this is no longer possiblke, it starts to use harddisk space like
plain old Apple virtual memory.
My own Mac is down, so currently I run on a borrowed SE/30 with 5MB RAM,
RAM trippled to 13MB (All I can do without enabling 32-bit adressing, and I
am too lazy to download MODE-32).
Sometimes, it is real slow when RAM Doubler has to use disk a lot.
The way to triple memory is to open your RAM Doubler extension (in
extension folder) with ResEdit, and edit the pref resource. It requires
version 1.01 or later of RAM Doubler to work.
PS: I am not the legal owner of RAM Doubler myself, as I have 17MB of
memory in my own Mac. I am currently evaluating a copy for some place that
considers buying a two digit number of copies.

>3. Same as above, but under Unix.
The speed of TDM depends on a number of factors, and I will list them
in decreasing order of importance:
1. Use TDM's internal TCP/IP stack instead of MacTCP, because our
own stack does a much better job of caching the download files. This should
give you a substantial improvement right away.
2. Use built-in ethernet on the TDM server since this is much faster than an
add-in card on the TDM server.
3. If you can move to a Novell or Unix server, this will speed things
up even further.
4. Segment your network (with a bridge or router) so that TDM has its
own little subnet, because your utilization levels will get pretty high
during TDM downloads (around 25-35%), and you don't want to contend
for the network with non-TDM traffic.
5. Make sure you have a fast enough disk drive on your TDM server to
keep up with the network download. Sometimes, this ends up being a big
bottleneck.
Your 3072KB image shouldn't take more than 30sec to a minute with a little
optimizing.
>4. Our current TDM server occaisonally runs "out of connections." Does
> anyone have a clear idea of what this implies? Our current TDM server

It sounds like you're using dynamic IP on the TDM server. One way
to never run out of connections is to use static IP addresses for each
client, which would be entered into a boot table. This is recommended
especially if you'll be connecting to TCP/IP services outside your lab.
The dynamic IP shouldn't run out of connections if you've given it
ten extra addresses than the number of Macs you're booting. Is there
any other diskless booting (non-Mac) going on in the same ethernet
as your TDM? This could take up an address temporarily since you've
configured TDM for dynamic IP.
>5. Is there a sneaky way to prevent someone from resetting PRAM?
We're looking into a way around this, maybe in the next version of the ROM.

Subject: Wishing for a SpreadBase/DataSheet...
Upon the surface of my hard drive is a holdout to what would otherwise
be a Microsoft Free Zone. Yes, of course, it is Excel. (Well, in my
defense, let me point out that I acquired it along with my used SE--
version 2.2 to be precise.)
I am not in love with Excel, although I am glad I have it on hand. I
would like to meet a REAL data-cruncher with some inbuilt common sense,
though. I have to admit I have not had the opportunity to take much
software for a test drive, so perhaps what I want has been out there for
years (it may even be none other than a more recent version of Excel for
all I know). Anyway...
1. I should be able to enter the data in spreadsheet form, with simple
rows and columns, and then design a database-type appearance with
fields I can shape and customize any-whichaways and logos, at least
as versatile as a Hypercard 1.1 sort of interface; and it should be
printable as either a database or a spreadsheet.
2. The Search/Find command should bring up a dialog box that allows me
to tell it where to look, what to look for, supporting wildcards,
and with the option of sorting the records in such a way that the
ones that fit the category rise to the top. A keystroke should give
me that dialog box instead of acting like "Find Again" as per Excel
2.2. Search/Find options should include both "union" and "inter-
section" Finds with several parameters, e.g., "I want the union of
'lives street higher than 248th' plus 'zip code 87131' intersected
with 'ethnicity=black', sort by found vs. nonfound entries. The
Search/Find dialog box should give the option of returning to the
last saved Sort order before resorting/searching or doing a new
sort/search on the current order--that's minimal; an improvement
that I wouldn't object to is multiple sort-undos from which sub-
sequent sorts are possible.
3. If in column G of my dataset I have record entries reading, let's
say, "Republican, Republican, Democrat, Democrat, Democrat, Demo-
crat, Republican, Independent, Democrat..." and I select that
column and ask for a pie chart, I want a program that's not too
stupid to guess that I might want all the Republicans in one total
category, the Democrats in another, and so on, broken down by
percentages of total entries; if I also highlight column H, which
is "number of greasy widgets connected to Quadra-driven MIDI ports"
I want the program to guess that I might want it to total the
quantities in column H for each category in column G and give me
a pie chart divided up by political party so I know and can see
what percentage of the greasy widgets are controlled by Democrats
using Quadras, and can tell at a glance whether or not they would
constitute a greasy-widget '040 MIDI leftward-leaning mandate.
4. I should be able to save the spreadsheet in a space-delimited format
in such a way that for each field the longest entry in characters
becomes the length of a monospaced-text field-space, with one space
separating that field from the next; and it should give a summary
telling me that what used to be column AF is now the range of
character-spaces 1498-1557. This is so I can upload the results to
powerful but brain-dead IBM-VM mainframe which can SAS the hell out
of my data if need be.
5. I should be able to merge several files "by" one category in such a
way that the result is a single file with a single record for each value
of the chosen merge category, and whatever info exists for each record in
all of the other categories appended, with blank spaces when necessary
(have I just described a "relational database?")
6. For the values in any column, as they change across any sequence of
rows, I should be able to tell the program to graph not only the
values, but also the RATE OF CHANGE.
5. If it takes up more than 1.5 MB on my hard drive, it had better have a
damn good reason. Let's say, one 900K app file plus a couple of
folders of extentions and elaborations that I can trash if they aren't
things I use very often. But no 4.5 MB whale-sized bloated application
with so many menu bars that it looks like a video arcade, thank you.
6. For me it would not be a truly big deal, but in the name of better
software, it should give the option of emulating either Excel or Lotus
1-2-3, with the same keyboard and menu commands that addicts of those
programs are addicted to. [Lotus for the Mac provided this for Lotus
classic users, for which they deserve credit. Too bad Lotus Mac is
a whale-sized program with menu bars from a video arcade.]
7. A manual of less than 70 pages describing how to set up all the mathe-
matical functions that aren't obvious right out of the box, not written
by whoever would otherwise have his or her fingers up their nose, but
instead by someone who CARES about the program and what it is supposed
to do for its users. The manual + program should take no more than a
week max to get the hang of; it should be intuitive, simple, elegant,
and therefore Mac-like. Sort of like if SuperPaint did numbers and text
entry. It should be simple enough that most people could get the basic
hang of it just by mousing around the menus and experimenting.
Anyone with a strong feeling of "Oh, you've just described ______", please
let me know. Right now I'm burbling along with Excel and FileMaker Pro and
getting the mediocrity of one world split into two half-programs.

I'm looking for a shareware or freeware which emulates X-windows on a Mac.
Does it exist?
